Comments Spam

Apologies about the huge amount of spam in the comments recently. A couple of months ago I added reCAPTCHA which worked for a while, but now somehow seems to be useless against spam bots.

So, I've disabled the ability to comment until I can come up with a better solution (maybe that won't be until I release the new version of the site). If anyone has any questions or suggestions you'll have to let me know by private message or with the contact area.

Again, sorry to anyone who got a load of 'new comment on your creation' emails.

In a surprise move, close to a decade after the release of the last in the series, it was announced today that Telltale Games will be developing the episodic Tales of Monkey Island, with the first installment to be released July 7th on PC. Many of the original team are involved with the project too, including Dave Grossman, Mike Stemmle and Dominic Armato as the voice of Guybrush.

LucasArts also revealed that they are creating a Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition for PC and Xbox Live Arcade, featuring enhanced graphics and voiceovers!

(For anyone who's unaware, Monkey Island was another adventure game series released by LucasArts which is similar in style to Grim Fandango.)

Site Updates

You might have noticed the lack of changes to the site recently, which is mainly because I'm actually working on a completely new version of this site. This one was made around 3 years ago, and since then I've learnt a huge amount which can be used to improve the site - for example, I know that the content submission system is a real pain at the moment .

None of the existing content, comments, members etc. will be lost - everything will be transferred over, and will be a whole lot easier to use and interact with.

We have a load of new features planned, but if you have any ideas about things to add to the site please let us know either by email or leaving a comment here.

In the mean time, I've finally added in some real CAPTCHA to put a stop to the spam bots, and the automatic login actually works now!

Residual Project Back from the Dead

If you're a fan of other classic LucasArts adventure games, I'm sure you will have come across ScummVM - a program which fixes all compatibility issues which the older software brings, and allows it to be run on systems such as Mac OSX, Linux, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS and even the iPod.

However, ScummVM is designed for the 2D SCUMM engine. LucasArts created Grim Fandango on a new 3D engine known as GrimE, which is what Residual is designed to run, and should be able to make the all too common compatibility issues a thing of the past.

In this alpha stage it runs Grim Fandango on Windows, Mac and Linux with limited functionality, but with your help it could be possible to speed up the development process, whether that's in a form of coding, all sorts of technical and other forms of advice, donations, or by simply showing interest and tapping developers on the back from time to time and wishing them good luck, any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated by the development team.

The project's website can be found at http://residual.sourceforge.net. The contact person for anything related to the Residual project is the leader of the project, aquadran. The team can be contacted via IRC or the official forum.

In other news, we also have a newly added arrangement of Manny and Meche in the sheet music section.

Grim Fandango Design Document Released!

Quite amazingly, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Grim Fandango, Tim Schafer has released the game's original puzzle document.

Written over a decade ago, the 72 page document details all of the puzzles from the game, as details and concept art of content which was cut from the game or heavily changed before the final game.

Make sure you take a look.

Update - The document is no longer online, probably due to the fact that Tim Schafer doesn't actually own it.

Some New Stuff!

Firstly, thanks to some clever scripting by Nick Donaldson, you can now play Grim Fandango using the joystick on a WiiMote. All you'll need is a computer with a bluetooth adapter and a WiiMote.

We were also informed about an entertaining YouTube video by Samuel Heiligers in which he plays "Manny & Meche" from the Grim Fandango soundtrack on a violin while dressed up as Manny Calavera:

Be sure to take a look, and why not submit some of your own fan creations? Whether it's artwork, fan fiction, or something more original, we'd be happy to feature it on the site.

The Grim Fandango Novel Returns

You may have heard of the original (unofficial) novelisation of Grim Fandango created by MeddlingMonk many years ago, or you may even be lucky enough to have a copy saved to your computer. Since it was published, it has become increasingly hard to find.

However, leading up to the game's 10th anniversary, MeddlingMonk has completed a thorough revision of the novel, which is now available here on the site for download.

In other news, we have given the site a much needed update. New content includes pages such as Compatability which should help with compatability issues with the game (such as running it on Vista), Where to Buy which we aim to update with a worldwide list of stores selling Grim Fandango and the Collecting page which features scans and information about various Grim Fandango collector's items.

We also have some new features we're adding, including email notification when a comment is made on one of your fan creations, and a jukebox with music from the game to use whilst browsing the site.

Grim Fandango Article in The Escapist

An interesting article has appeared in this week's issue of the online magazine The Escapist talking about Grim Fandango's impressive fan community. It also includes quotes from interviews with us and the webmasters of the Grim Fandango Network. You can see the article, "Walk, Don't Run", here.

We would also like to talk about the Grim Fandango Half-Life 2 Mod. We have a fair amount of content completed, but due to time issues with members of the team, the project has been making very slow progress for a while, and has recently pretty much hit a standstill.

However, we are willing to attempt to relaunch it. If we can get together a large enough team, then we'll start working on the project again. If we can't, then it's obvious there isn't enough interest in the mod for it to go ahead. So, if you (or anyone you know) are interested in helping with modelling, mapping, texturing, design or anything else, please let us know, and if there's enough interest we'll be able to continue the project.
