Compatibility with Vista/XP  Open the jukebox
Grim Fandango was originally designed to run on Windows 98 machines, so these days many people are having trouble getting it to run on Windows Vista or XP machines. Below are a set of general steps to get the game running, advice on specific problems, and finally some tips on how to get the game to look it's best

I can't get the installer to work!

Download bgbennyboy's installer

I can't get the game to run!

1) Download the patch

2) Download bgbennyboy's launcher

3) Make sure you are running the game as an administrator

4) Set the compatability mode to Windows 98 / Windows ME
Windows XP - Right click on the Grim Fandango executable and click on Properties, then click on the Compatability tab

I'm stuck on the conveyor belt!

1) Make sure you have the patch installed.

2) Try to stay near the middle of the conveyor belt, and keep running (holding shift) forwards, and as soon as you see Manny's head glance at the lever, press U.

3) If that doesn't work, try downloading CPU Killer - it's a program that you can run and use to slow down your computer (remember that Grim Fandango was design for much slower PCs ), and that might make it a lot easier to get off the conveyor belt.

I can't complete the forklift puzzle in the elevator!

1) Make sure you have the patch installed.

2) Try downloading CPU Killer - it's a program that you can run and use to slow down your computer (remember that Grim Fandango was design for much slower PCs ), which will slow the game down and give you more time to position the forklift.

Is there anything I can do to improve the graphics

Unfortunately it isn't possible to increase the resolution of the game - it has been attempted, however it resulted in the backgrounds becoming distorted. However, it is possible to force anti aliasing on the characters.

1) Make sure you have Hardware Acceleration enabled - this can be done through Options screen of the main menu (accessed by pressing F1)

2) Turn on anti-aliasing through your graphics card's control panel. Anti-aliasing with smooth over all of the rough edges on the characters and other objects giving them a much cleaner look. However, on most computers this will result in a 'trail' being left behind the characters (most noticably Manny).

The normal way to access your graphics card's control panel is by right clicking on your desktop and selecting Properties. On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button. Then click on the tab for your graphics card, and you should see an option to start a control panel of some sort. From there it's up to you to find the anti-aliasing setting and change it to 2x.
