Chapter 2:

Once I reached the end of that gravely road, I saw the beginning of the Petrified Forest, a place I would remember for the rest of my non-life.

I had already been told what a dangerous place it was, but still I decided to enter with nothing but my walking stick. Not any tree had any leafs, which made me remember my last days, when every tree around my block was missing them too.

Three days had passed until I finally reached its centre, a group of big, old trees surrounded me, but I found out there was another way, and chose to go for it.

After walking for an hour, I found myself in front of a rusty door, but as it was the only way I knew, I grabbed my walking-stick tightly, and decided to adventure in. The place was uglier than the door, a dam made by human skulls & bones covered all the land, the rest was a sort of lake composed by tar. Even worse was the fact that inside that pond, a bunch of beavers were swimming, but these weren't ordinary beavers, apparently they used bones as their raw material. Out of nowhere one of this creatures appeared in front of me, so I used the only thing I had with me, I gripped the walking-stick, and with all my strength I hit the bone-eater. That incident gave me enough time to escape. At the end of the way, a road covered in dust was visible, as I had no place to go I followed it, until I got to a city encircled by fog.

As I climbed through the stairs, a stocky man, wearing an elegant suit approached me and said:

"Excuse me, are you new in town?"

"Yes..., Yes I am" I answered surprised by his question

"Are you looking for a job?"

"I guess, I have just arrived, as you may see"

"All right then, would you care to follow me?" He took me to a small diner, with the words "Rub-A-Mat" written on its awning.

"This is the Rub-A-Mat, its a small place, but some day its going to be known all over town"

"Its not that bad, but why have you brought me here ?"

"It' s still a new place, so we are out of staff right now, so how about working here?"

"What kind of work would I do if you employ me?"

"Pretty simple, everything" He said with a fake smile in his face

"Everything?..."

"Yes but don't worry, the payment is not that bad, and you can live in here free." He exclaimed on his last attempt to hire me.

"Fine, after all there's nothing for me to do here, right?"

"Excellent, you'll start tomorrow, by the way my name is Max, but you might call me Maximino"

"Mine is Celso, but why were you so desperate to hire me"

He hesitated for a minute or two, but finally he gave in "Personal reasons, I have just bought this place, and I'm having some financial problems, so..."

After telling me this, he walked to a small supply room and got a mop, which he handled to me.

"Fine, take this, you're starting right now, I have to fix some things on the far side of town..."

With no regret, he left, as I inspected the place. A nice, smooth jazz came out of the loudspeakers on the wall, I grabbed the mop and started to work, happy about getting a job so quickly, but worried about my future in this town.
